Legal Requirements & Compliance
CCTV is not just a security tool — it processes personal data and must be operated lawfully
UK GDPR & Data Protection Act
Any CCTV system capturing images of identifiable individuals must have a lawful basis, be transparent to those recorded, and keep footage only as long as necessary.
Legitimate interests with balancing assessment
Clear signage informing people of CCTV use
Proportionate retention periods with justification
Footage Security & Access
Recorded footage must be protected against unauthorised access. We configure user accounts, audit trails and access controls as part of every installation.
Strong passwords and user account management
Logging of who accessed footage and when
Procedures for responding to data requests
Maintenance & System Integrity
A CCTV system that isn't recording correctly, or has incorrect timestamps, has limited evidential value. Regular maintenance keeps your system operationally effective and legally defensible.
Camera Checks
Visual inspection of all camera views for clarity, focus and field of view — with cleaning and adjustment where needed.
System Integrity
Verification that all cameras are recording correctly, with storage capacity review and hard drive health monitoring to prevent gaps in coverage.
System Security
Time synchronisation, network connectivity and user account audit — ensuring evidential integrity and protecting against unauthorised access.
Changing Provider or Inheriting a System?
If you've had issues with poor response times, unresolved faults, missing service records or a lack of documentation from a previous contractor, we can carry out a system health check, bring records up to date and take over ongoing maintenance. We'll give you an honest assessment of what you have before committing to a contract.
Common CCTV Issues
Problems we regularly diagnose and resolve
Poor Image Quality
Dirty lenses, incorrect focus or camera degradation affecting image clarity and evidential value.
Solution: Cleaning, adjustment or camera replacementRecording Gaps
Storage failure or insufficient capacity causing recording gaps and loss of evidential integrity.
Solution: Storage health checks and capacity upgradesIncorrect Time Stamps
Incorrect time and date stamps compromising evidential value and investigation effectiveness.
Solution: Time synchronization configurationNon-Compliant Signage
Non-compliant or missing signage failing to meet transparency obligations under UK GDPR.
Solution: Signage supply and siting guidanceHow We Work
Our structured approach ensures quality outcomes on every project
Site Survey
We visit your premises to assess coverage requirements, lighting conditions, mounting points and network infrastructure.
Scope & Compliance
We define camera locations, recorder specification, retention rationale and UK GDPR compliance measures.
Design (if required)
For complex sites we produce a formal design with camera schedules, field-of-view diagrams and data flow plans.
Installation
Our engineers install cameras, cabling, recorders and network equipment with minimal disruption and professional cable management.
Commissioning & Testing
We configure recording schedules, motion detection, remote access and verify image quality and system integrity.
Handover & Support
You receive full system documentation, user training, compliance records and the option of a planned maintenance agreement.

Learn MoreCommon Questions
Do I need to register with the ICO for my CCTV system?
Many organisations that operate CCTV capturing images of identifiable individuals are required to register with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and pay the annual data protection fee. However, some exemptions apply — for example, certain small businesses or sole traders may be exempt depending on how they process personal data. Whether registration is required depends on your specific circumstances, so we recommend using the ICO's self-assessment tool to confirm your position. Operating CCTV without registering when required to do so can result in a civil monetary penalty.
What is the difference between IP and analogue CCTV systems?
Analogue systems transmit video over coaxial cable to a Digital Video Recorder (DVR). They are a mature, cost-effective technology but are limited in resolution and flexibility. IP (Internet Protocol) systems transmit digital video over a network — typically Cat5e/Cat6 cabling or Wi-Fi — to a Network Video Recorder (NVR) or cloud storage. IP cameras generally offer significantly higher resolution, more flexible installation options, remote access capability and easier integration with other systems. Most new commercial installations use IP technology, and many existing analogue systems can be migrated to IP in phases to protect existing cabling infrastructure.
Can I access my CCTV system remotely?
Yes — IP-based CCTV systems can be configured to allow authorised users to view live and recorded footage remotely via a smartphone app, web browser or dedicated client software. Remote access requires a stable internet connection at the site and appropriate network configuration. We set up remote access as part of commissioning, configure user accounts with appropriate permissions, and advise on secure access practices to ensure remote connectivity does not introduce unnecessary security risk to the system or your network.
